Not sure what to say?

Floyd was the chair of my thesis committee and the subject of some of my favorite grad school memories. He is among the finest people I have known.

Dr. Coleman was my thesis advisor at SIUE, and one of the best teachers ever. I am sad to learn of his passing. He was my definition of a scholar and a gentleman.

My condolences to all the loved ones of this wonderful human being. I met Dr. Floyd Coleman in 1980 when he was Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He also taught courses in art history at the Department of Art at SIU. I admired him for his kindness and generosity toward his students and for his dedication as an inspirational teacher. I benefited from his gentle counsel as I struggled with the issues of being a transplant from a foreign...

I attended the great "SOUL OF A NATION" show at the Broad Museum in LA. this past weekend and had a chance to spend some time with Michael Harris. I wanted to send some photos and comments to Floyd, only to learn of his passing. Floyd and Michael wrote marvelous essays for my co-authored book Walls of Heritage-Walls of Pride-African American Murals with a foreword by Barry Gaither. The book is the only comprehensive look at the wonderful community murals, most of which no longer exist. A...

Dr. Floyd W. Coleman was my Friend and Adviser. He supported me when nobody else would! He made me believe Howard University was the place to flourish, intellectually. There are no words that can express the sadness, and a void that cannot be filled or replaced... Rest in Peace Dr. Coleman.

Dr. Coleman's expertise, calming demeanor, smile and passion made working for him while in Howard's Fine Arts Department and with him on the Porter Colloquium a special joy. My condolences to his family and dear friends on his passing.

My sympathy to the family of Dr. Floyd Coleman. I did not know him well, but his limited conversations with me were forthright and insightful about art, life, and being an artist.

Floyd was a brilliant advisor and thinker about all things Afro-Americana and the intersections with art, culture and the humanities. He was the consummate quiet activist. We know, however, that there are parts of his personal activism history in which he was a fire-brand, take-no-prisoners scribe. He embellished all of his work with the highest level of intellect founded on human understanding and a high regard to scholarship. He was a great writer, and his legacies will live on for...
