Frances McKnight Obituary

Frances H. McKnight of Arlington Heights Funeral services for Frances H. McKnight (nee Dunstan), 95, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. Born March 13, 1908, in Jackson, Minn., where her grandfather had homesteaded at the time of the Civil War, she died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Home Sweet Home, Arlington Heights. Frances had an interesting childhood, including spending some of her formative years with her family on a sheep ranch in Montana. She was married for 67 years to her high school sweetheart, Leon "Bud" McKnight, until he died in 1994. They lived in Seattle, Chicago, St. Louis, and retired to Pompano Beach, Fla. In addition to being a devoted wife and loving companion, homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother for most of her life, she also had a short career as a secretary at USF&G, of which she was always proud. Frances belonged to the Palatine Women's Bowling League, and was an avid bridge player and golfer, justifiably proud of her hole in one at the Pompano Beach Country Club. She was also very active in the Broward County (Fla.) Shell Club, which took her and Bud on cruises to exotic places and helped them assemble a unique collection of shells and shell crafts. She also enjoyed playing the piano, fishing, and square dancing, but not at the same time. Frances was the loving mother of Roger (Jayne) McKnight, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Claudia (the late Alfred E.) Hembd, of Prospect Heights; grandmother of Alfred (Patti) Hembd, of Wheeling, Paula (Bob) Kenny, of Prospect Heights, Barbara Henderson, currently of India, Ronald (Lynne) Hembd, Edward (Jeanine) Hembd, and Claudia E. Hembd, all of Arlington Heights, Kim (Cmdr. Scott) Fisher, and Lee (Connie) Severino, both of Virginia Beach, Va., William Gallaway, of Omaha, Neb., and Brian Gallaway, of Poughkeepsie; sister of Lyle (Dot) Dunstan, of Portland, Ore.; great-grandmother of 18, and great-great-grandmother of five. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Brownie (nee Baily) Dunstan, and her sister, Dorothy (nee Dunstan) Young. Visitation will be from4 to 8 p.m. today, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home Sweet Home, 814 N. Dryden, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Friends may visit www.dailyherald.com/obits to express condolences and sign the guest book.
