Not sure what to say?

Dear Jim,
We are so sorry to learn of your loss. Fran was one of our favorite people and we always enjoyed keeping in touch with the two of you through Christmas letters. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts.

Dear Jim:

I am so very sorry to hear about Fran. I don't think I ever saw her when she wasn't smiling. She was a very, very special woman. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Jim,
I am saddened to hear of Fran's passing. It's been too long since I've seen either of you. I always enjoyed hearing her updates about the library collections. My thoughts are with you and I hope to see you soon.

Dear Jim (and family),

Laurie and I were sorry to learn of Fran's passing, as we hold the two of you in our highest regard as wonderful, caring people. Please accept our sympathy and know that we are thinking of you at this very difficult time.

Dear Jim,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. You are in my thoughts. Love,

Jim:

Maureen and I are grieving for your loss - it is our loss as well. I'll always remember when I first met Fran at your house, when the two of you held a party to welcome me to the university forty years ago. What gracious hosts you were! Fran was so full of life, and you were so helpful - I knew immediately that I had found the best academic home I could ever imagine. Fran will be in our hearts and our memories forever. Her life inspired us to be better people. Bless her.

Dear Jim,

I was so sorry to hear about Fran's passing. I still remember the kind reception and words she had for me when you hosted me at your house during my recruitment visit to San Diego. I understand it is hard to lose a long time partner and companion and I hope that your family will provide you with support and comfort. My sincere condolences.
