Their friendship spanned through early jobs to retirement: he came to visit at the hospital when my father was in his last days after suffering a brain occlusion. Our sympathies to his family and close ones.

Dr. Newton was my Medieval Latin Professor and a member of my dissertation committee for my PhD in Medieval History at Duke. I fondly remember his and his wife´s inviting Sally and me to his house for supper. He was a friendly and extremely supportive faculty member. I learned a lot from him, in particular the importance of being supportive of your students. He will be missed by all who knew him.
