Frank Britto, 85, of King Street, Newport, RI, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Newport Hospital. He was the former husband of the late Barbara Ann Jones. Born in New Bedford, MA on May 27, 1924, he was the son of the late Jose and Catherine (Lopes) Britto. Mr. Britto was a US Navy Veteran of World War II having served in the Southern Pacific Theatre as a Pharmacist's Mate. Upon leaving the service, he was employed by the Department of the Navy at the Newport Naval Base as a pest control operator and supervisor before retiring in 1988. He also ran a local contracting business providing carpentry, plumbing and electrical services and property management. Mr. Britto was a Golden Glove and professional boxer and trainer. He developed many youth programs for the Boys Club and YMCA teaching young males the art of boxing. He also trained and sponsored professional and semi-professional boxers and venues. He is survived by his children, Edward Niel Britto of American Canyon, CA, Micheal Anthony Britto of Vallejo, CA, Jeffrey Thomas Britto of Fall River, MA, Michelle Cenna Britto of Georgia and Steven Jay Britto of Newport, RI; his sister, Anne Jones of Boston, MA; and six grandchildren, Myra Britto Garcia, Edward N. Britto, Jr., Michael Britto, Jr., Kelsea Britto, Tanesha Britto and Brianna Britto. He was the father of the late Frank Joseph Britto. Calling hours will be held on both Tuesday, February 16, 2010 and Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 4-7 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Wake service prayers will be held on Wednesday February 17, 2010 at 6:45 pm followed by military honors. Burial will be private.
