MIDDLETOWN – Frank D. Maguire, 86, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from complications related to lymphoma.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1928, he lived in Montreal until moving to New England in 1963.
He was a graduate of St. Michael's Seminary, Concordia University, and received a Master of Arts and PhD in Medieval Studies from the Institute of Medieval Studies at the University of Montreal. His university studies also took place at Oxford University and in Deggendorf, Germany. In the 1970s he was a visiting scholar in Ethics at Harvard Divinity School, and studied Ethics and Corporate Policy at Harvard Business School. Fluent in French, he also spoke German. Much of his research for his doctoral thesis was done in French, Latin, and Greek.
Frank began his teaching career in the states as Professor of Religious Studies at Newton College of Sacred Heart. In 1971 he joined the faculty at Salve Regina University as graduate and undergraduate Professor of Religious Studies and BioMedical Ethics. He remained at Salve for 34 years, retiring in 2003. He designed new courses in Biomedical and Global ethics. In his retirement, Frank would periodically delve into a topic he previously didn't have time to explore such as String Theory, Astronomy, Calculus, and Classical Music. He always preferred to read scholarly texts rather than fiction.
Frank was a Lector at St. Mary's Church in Newport and a former member of the Board of Trustees at Newport Hospital where he sat on the hospital's Ethics Committee for over 20 years. Frank was a longtime member of the Catholic Theological Society, College Theology Society, and the Institute for Society, Ethics, and Life Sciences.
An avid sportsman, he started his career as first baseman for the Hamiltonians, a double A farm team for the St. Louis Cardinals. Tennis and golf were his favorite sports in his later years. He was a member of Wanumetonomy Golf Club and of the Casino Indoor Friday night tennis group for 35 plus years, maintaining the ever-important schedule of players and providers of refreshments. He was Men's doubles champ at Pop Flack, Cedar Hammock, FL, and Agawam Country Club. He also coached the men's tennis team at Salve Regina University. He was affectionately called coach by many tennis players as he had the ability to analyze a person's tennis swing or shot choice and make suggestions for improvement, whether the player requested assistance or not.
He leaves his brothers John Maguire (Naomi deceased) of Ottawa, Ontario, and Kevin Maguire (Simone) of Ste Anne des Lac, Quebec.
He was predeceased by his brother Brian and his sister Maureen Maguire Souccar and her husband Joseph Souccar.
He leaves his wife of 47 years Josephine Egan Maguire, and his two children: Christina Maguire, Bristol, RI; and Brian Maguire and his spouse Josie, Franklin Ma; and his two grandchildren Kelsey and Gavin Maguire.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2015, from 4-7 p.m. in Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport.
Memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse of Newport and Bristol Counties-Hospice, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Not sure what to say?

Jo,

I was so sorry to hear about Frank. I just found out and was deeply saddened. I learned alot playing tennis with him and will surely miss him. He was always kind and had a great sense of humor. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jo,
A gentleman and a scholar, but first and foremost a gentleman-that is the Frank that enlightned our lives through association over the past few years. It is with great sadness that we have just learned of his passing. Please know and understand that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Henry & Roberta Veix

Frank was who I was always hoping to see when I stopped by Pop Flack. It was fitting that I heard of his passing this Sunday morning at "the courts".
He will always be a part of my Tennis Family.

What comes to mind: Frank, as a husband to AAUW, attending a selected meeting and interviewing the speaker afterwards...also, hosting, with Jo, gourmet dinners that were followed by hilarious "parlor games" (Dictionary?). And, more recently, meeting Frank outside Barnes and Noble. He must have been pursuing some of those subjects of interest in retirement. A renaissance man to all who knew him.

Not sure which was more fun - playing tennis with a talented and competitive player or sitting on the bench overlooking the Pop Flack courts and sharing his conversation and stories and comments on the players below. It is a grace in our lives that he and Jo befriended us when we were just new to the area. We will remember him with great affection and miss his company. Paul & Sharleen
