Frank PORTONOVA Obituary

PORTONOVA, Frank J. Frank J. Portonova, Sr., 64, of Wethersfield, formerly of Rocky Hill, loving, devoted and inseparable husband of Barbara (Gordon) Portonova for 42 years, died Thursday (August 26, 2010) at Hartford Hospital with his family by his bedside after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 9, 1946 in Hartford and was the son of the late John and Josephine (Antonello) Portonova. Frank was a graduate of Bulkeley High School, Class of 1964. He served in the Army reserve during the Vietnam War. He owned and operated Dinosaur Automotive in Rocky Hill and later Eagles Automotive in West Hartford for over 30 years. He enjoyed golfing and going to the casino. Frank loved to watch his grandson's hockey games and his granddaughter's horse shows. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and the very best grandfather who made an everlasting impression on anyone he met. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter, Trina Portonova and Gregory Nolan of Newington, his son, Frank J. Portonova, Jr. of Wethersfield; grandchildren, Frank J. Portonova III, Alyssa N. Portonova, Anthony M. Portonova and Natalie Portonova-Nolan; two sisters, Olimpia Antolini of West Hartford and Carmella Phelps and husband, Paul of Hartford; sisters-in-law, Kathy Sitaro and husband, Frank of Wethersfield and Jane Gordan of Hartford and several nieces and nephews. He will also be sorely missed by a host of dear and close friends who he always made laugh. Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by a brother, Anthony Portonova and brother-in-law, Ezio Antolini. A very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Hartford Hospital ICU and the Harry & Helen Gray Cancer Center, especially, Dr. Kamradt, nurse Laurie Scarpio and Charmain for the love, care and compassion shown to Frank and his family. Funeral service will be Monday (August 30) at 9 AM at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. Calling hours are Sunday (August 29) from 3-7 PM at the funeral chapel. Donations in Frank's memory may be made to the Frank J. Portonova, Sr. Memorial Fund, C/O Trina Portonova, 25 Valley View Drive, Newington, CT 06111 for the education of Frank's four grandchildren. My uncle Frank gave me my first smoke at about age 5 or 6. As a result I never smoked a cigarette in my life. He added years to my life. He drove me at illegal speeds in his sports car on Hillside Ave. because it's all I wanted to do. He gave me adventure. He was ALWAYS kind & funny when I was with him. For that I am forever thankful. He remains with me. My heart goes out to everyone he touched because it's a sad day. However, the world is a better place for Frank having been in it so passionately.
Love,

Dear Barbara, Trina and Frank,
We are so sorry. Frank always made us laugh, and he was such an amazing man. Brendan always thought of him like a second father. He always talked about how much he loves him. I can't imagine the pain you feel right now, and can't come up with the right words but please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. We will miss our Uncle Frank.

Dear Barbara, Frank and Trina,

When I was 6 or 7, I was playing kickball in a parking lot next to my grandfathers six family house on Broad Street in Hartford, when I fell and my knee landed on a piece of glass. I don’t remember much except crying all the way to the emergency room. What I do remember, like it was yesterday, was seeing my Uncle Frank by my side with a big smile on his face, telling me jokes and making me laugh. I think I actually stopped crying for a moment. That is how I will always remember my Uncle Frank.

I love him and will miss him very much. Somehow I know he is making everyone laugh in heaven including my dad and Uncle Port.

Thank you Uncle Frank for watching over my mom, I will never forget you.

Love your nephew Mark

To the Portonova Family,

We had the pleasure of growing up with your husband and father when he lived on Hillside Ave. Those were great times and we were a close knit group of kids in the days when you could leave your doors open and everyone helped each other. Frank always made us laugh. He will be in our hearts forever. You're in our thoughts and prayers.
