Not sure what to say?

On the anniversary of Coach Russell's passing. I remember taking Wrestling 101 at NYU Engineering School in University Heights, NYC in 1961. On the first day coach Russell was telling us how to build a strong body and wrestling was good for self defense no matter how big your opponent was. So he demonstrates by picking the biggest kid in the class, ME! I mean I wasn't that big; 6ft 5 at 245lb. So I stand up and coach says, "come at me." Next thing I know, with a mild grunt, coach...

Frank's Memories live on. He was our Phys. Ed teacher and wrestling coach at NYU's School of Engineering, University Heights, Bronx NY. 1961 to 1965. Unique in style and a gentleman. I remember things he told us to this day, some 60 year later. His energy and military style teaching is unforgettable...and boy did he keep us fit. Condolences to his family and all those lives Frank touched. Continue to Rest in peace Coach. Memory eternal. Big Lou Gee

Frank was one of my closest friends at the beach. He had a heart as big as a medicine ball and never let a friend down.

Frank, I went to Jones Beach when I was growing up in New York, but I'm not sure I ever truly appreciated it until I visited it again, with you, a few years ago. You brought the magic to life. Harry always talked about his great friendship with you. You are a hero.

I met Mr. Russell when I was in the 8th Grade at Merrick Avenue Junior High School (1975-1976). My last name was Lubrano at the time. I just wanted his family to know that he was one of the most funniest teachers I ever had. The class I happened to be in was quite a challenging group for him and he definitely had his hands full. He always had that sly smile though even though we made him crazy. Although I never received a grade higher than a 55 in his class, I still had a great time with...

...when he shall die take him
and cut him out in little stars,
and he will make the face of heaven so fine
that all the world will be in love with night
and pay no worship to the garish sun.

Romeo & Juliet

In sympathy,

I worked for Frank at Beach 4 in '56 and '57. A finer athlete and gentleman would be hard to find.

I will treasure the memories of sharing lifeguard duties with Frank - and riding hurricane induced waves together, all to many decades ago.

On behalf of the Glavin brothers, Frank was known by each of us in separate instances and sometimes all together. He was a kind and friendly man who you respected and could count on. He was a great Captain and it was a pleasure to work for him and share the love of the Corps and ocean. He will be missed but not forgotten.
