Byles Memorial Home - New London Obituary

Frank “Frankie” Richard Zito, 75, of Waterford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 18, 2019.

Frankie was born on September 14, 1944, on Fishers Island, NY. Heworked for the DuPont Family on Fisher’s Island and their yacht, “The Goddess.” Frankie proudly served in the United States Army, and spent most of his time in Germany.  Upon his return, he worked at Electric Boat, where he met the love of his life, Cathy. He joined the Local Union 777 and worked as a steam fitter for over 30 years.

Frankie leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Catherine Carlson Zito, their children David (Christine), Sharon (Troy), and Jeffrey. Affectionately known as “Hoppy” to his grandchildren, remembering him in love are Anna Marie, Dylan, Anna, Shelby, and Katie. Also left to cherish his memory is his mother, Melen Arasimowicz Zito, his sister MaryAnne Alfieri, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frankie is predeceased by his brother, John Zito.

In his early years, Frankie spent his free time coaching his children and volunteering in the snack stands, which eventually lead to his permanent position as sideline coach and biggest supporter for his grandchildren. Frankie was a hard worker, a great teacher, and a role model. To Frankie, if you were on time you were late, which often resulted in him arriving to events hours before their start.

He officially retired from work in 2005, which is when he began his full-time position as grandparent. Frankie spent countless hours on softball fields, basketball courts, wrestling matches, boxing rings, dance recitals, and gymnastics meets.

Having spent 44 years in the same neighborhood, friendships that last a lifetime were developed here. There are many adventures and stories that involve the neighborhood families, and for that, the family is eternally grateful. The Zito’s house was a home to many.

Frankie loved trips to Saratoga, horse racing, cruises, and Las Vegas.  He loved to travel, but was the worse traveler. He hated being in the water, but loved the ocean. Frankie was one of a kind, who leaves behind stories of his countless adventures, memories of his snarky personality and witty comebacks, and stories about the “old days” that will last a lifetime. His love for his wife, his family, and those that knew him will never be forgotten. He truly was, one of the all-time greats.

A gathering in Frankie’s honor will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to the Cactus Jack Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 145, Waterford, CT 06385.

Not sure what to say?

I am so sorry to hear of Franks passing, I worked with Frank many times and always enjoyed our time together, as he made work fun.

Cathy and family,
I was so sorry to hear this last night. Frank always made me laugh and was a wonderful man. My heart goes out to all of you. Sending you my love❤

Frankie was one of the funniest, kind and giving people I ever knew. He would light up a room just by his presence and will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to Cathy, David, Sharon and Jeffrey and all of your family in this difficult time. Rest in peace my friend.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Jeff - May your heart be comforted by the loving memories of your father. My deepest condolences to you and your family on your loss.

Cathy and the entire family, May memories help the hearts & minds of all who loved him and had the pleasure of just meeting Frankie. Keep on and never stop loving the memories.

You are indeed fortunate if you got to know this remarkable man. His mantra was simple and uncomplicated: helping others without being asked, frowning less and smiling more, forgiving those who just don't know any better. I'm convinced the world would be a better place if all of us put such practices into play every chance we get. Frank Zito would have liked that.

Sharon -
My condolences to your and your family.

Mary anne so sorry for your loss my condolences to you and your family, may your brother rest in peace.
