I lived on Wake Island from 1957-1961 and grew up there. I roamed the beaches and walked where heroes of America fought and died in those early dark days of World War II. I have always felt honored that I had the opportunity to be there as a young boy. I later wrote a book about growing up there entitied "A Little Piece of Heaven (growing up on Wake Island.)"
I love the island and I think about the brave men that were there.
God Bless all.

Met him at a Wake Island Defenders reunion in San Diego. He was highly respected by his fellow Marines, especially for his work with the Wig-Wag. He was a great source of information and, because of his work, the Wake Marines were able to maintain their friendships and keep informed for all those years. My sympathies go out to the family. Semper Fi First Sergeant Gross.

This was a sad loss for my family and me. My earliest memories of Uncle Frank were upon his return from WW II and Japanese prison camp. He always had time for a "toddler" nephew. A tough Marine but a gentle and caring man.
My sincere condolences to my beloved Aunt Mildred, and cousins Frank,John and Doug on our mutual loss.

my mother called last week to tell me of Mr. Gross' passing. I was a student of his at GV in the mid 70's. I remember three things especially about him. First was the obvious love he had for his wife, mildred. he called her by name in a classroom of teenagers with such a true affection in his voice, you just knew how much he loved her. Second, his stories of his time in the POW camp. We all sat spellbound as he shared things that were difficult for him, but spoke to our class (which was...
