Franklin Jones Obituary

Frank passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009, peacefully at home surrounded by his family, after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. He was 74.

Throughout his life, Frank always put his family first; his wife and children were his greatest source of love and joy. He enjoyed the Sierras, fly fishing, photography, and hiking. The family celebrations and dinner hour always included lively discussions about politics, history and current events, as well as good food and wine. He treasured his close personal friendships and enjoyed meeting new people and sharing experiences and perspectives. His quiet, analytical, and intellectual demeanor ideally suited his work as a Superior Court judge where he served from 1991 to 2006.

Frank was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 23, 1935 to Franklin and Thelma Jones. His childhood was spent between Mt. Lebanon, Pa. and Port Chester, New York. He spent four years at Princeton University, and received a degree in history in 1957. His passion for history and learning would continue throughout his life. After college, he served three years in the U.S. Navy on an escort destroyer; his home port was Pearl Harbor. He had three Far East cruises and loved his Navy days. He then received his law degree from University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) and clerked for the Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit that took him between California and Arizona. While in Tucson, he met Nancy Alwine at a ski resort outside the city. Nancy and Frank married on February 12, 1966, and moved to Fresno, Ca., for its central location, access to wilderness areas and great fishing. They had four children, Caroline, David, Kendall and Sarah. Frank joined the law firm of Andrews, Andrews where he worked as a civil attorney for 26 years. His appointment to the Superior Court in 1991, and the years that he served on the bench were the pinnacle of his professional career.

He is preceded in death by his mother Thelma; father Franklin; and son David.

Frank is survived by his wife Nancy; his children, Caroline Jones, Sarah Jones; son, Kendall Jones; and daughter-in-law Jennifer; his grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Jones; his sister, Marjorie and brother-in-law, Carl Stenberg.

From the moment I met Frank decades ago, I was struck by his decency, thoughtfulness, and kindness. As others have remarked in one way or another, he was such a gentleman. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Nancy: I did not know Frank, but from what I have read, I believe you and Frank had such a wonderful life together! I do think of you often.

Nancy, if I could find the top of my desk and some real notepaper I would write you a proper condolence note.

I was very sorry to hear of Frank's death. I only met him briefly at the 2000 reunion, but I was terribly impressed. I liked him immediately and wished we didn't live on opposite coasts.

You know he, and all of you, will be in my prayers!

It is hard to think that my old law school roommate is no longer with us. I’m sure that being able to debate and discuss law with Frank raised my grades a few points. F.P. was a wonderful and steadfast friend through all these years. He was vitally interested in all the issues on the planet and usually had a fresh point of view about them. He dissected and examined each situation and was never content until he knew he true, objective, apolitical, non-argumentative facts The same qualities that made him a great Judge made him a great human being.
In short, he was such a good guy, and they’re always in short supply
You and Frank had a strong marriage and wonderful children. It was nice to hear from you that Frank left peacefully and with his loved ones present.
Susie and I send our love and best wishes,
John Hardy

To the Family of Judge Franklin Jones: My name is Don Penner and I regret that I could not atttend the entire service today and attempt to speak to each one of you. My calendar was very heavy today and there were many judges that wanted to attend this service. I was able to stay long enough to hear the comments of Kendall, Caroline and Sarah. I was so moved by those comments and the portion of the service before those comments. I know it is no revelation to any of you that Frank was respected by so many people. You knew him better than any of us. I was able to relate to Nancy last night how important Frank was to me when I knew him as Professor Jones in the early 1970's at the law school where he taught my civil procedure class. No matter how silly the question, he always listened and always made me feel my questions were welcomed. Finally, I wanted to say how much I enjoyed that service today (I can see Frank in the palm of God's hand) and how obvious it was to me that his greatest achievment in this life was pouring his life into each one of you. Thank you for sharing your father/husband with all of us.

Dear Nancy,

I am so sorry to hear about Frank's death. Janet Hoelzel Albert, whose sister lives in Clovis, sent the obituary to the email group of the Schlarman High School class of 1955.

I only met Frank twice. Once in 1973 when I was passing through Fresno, and in 2000 at our 45th high school reunion in Danville, Illinois. He was a thoughtful, gentle man. I'm so sorry that you were out of town when Sharon and I were in Fresno a couple of years ago. It would have been good to see you and Frank.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was Frank's secretary at Andrews, Andrews, Thaxter, Jones & Baxter for a lot of years, then quit to go into real estate but didn't like it as much as I loved that office! I am so sad to hear that he has passed away. I always thought of him as such a nice, nice man!

Nancy and Family,

The old expression "a gentleman and a scholar" certainly applied to Frank. We will remember him as a good neighbor and loving family man...and the community will remember him as a dedicated lawyer and judge.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you...
