Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Fred J. Applegate passed into eternal life on November 24th, 2020 at Friendship Village in Chesterfield, Missouri. He was 90.

Fred was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a graduate of Fairview High School and Washington University.

Fred lived life to the fullest and was a man of many accomplishments and joys. He played professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinal’s organization. He proudly served his country in the Korean War, as an Army Sergeant stationed in Japan, receiving 5 medals of honor.

After leaving the service, he returned to St. Louis to work at Laclede Gas Company. His entire professional career was with one company where he retired after forty plus years as the organization’s Chief Auditor.

Fred was a dedicated Catholic and active in his church and community. He loved coaching CYC baseball, ushering at services and committed much of his time to church initiatives.

He was a humble and kind man whose actions spoke louder than his words. His greatest joy was his amazing wife and partner of 65 years Rose Mary (Bugg) Applegate. They cherished and loved each other and the devotion they shared is a shining light for all to follow. The couple was blessed with many exceptional friends.

Family always came first and his survivors and those who will miss him dearly include his wife Rose Mary, his son David Applegate, daughter-in-law Martha (Webster) Applegate, three grandchildren Christopher (Kelli), Michelle and Bradley Applegate. Fred also had two great grandchildren Kathleen and Hugh.

A private service will be held, in respect to the safety and health of our family and friends, at Christ Prince of Peace on Tuesday, December 1st followed by a burial ceremony at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. A service of the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory. Friends may sign the family's on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Christ Prince of Peace Parish at 415 Weidman Rd. Manchester Missouri, 63011.

Not sure what to say?

Coming in a little late here. Fred was my sister Maureen`s godfather. I remember Mr. Applegate from long-ago, David, it would be nice to chat sometime. I remember your mom and your dad with the greatest love and appreciation.

My sympathy to Fred´s family. I had the good fortune of working for Fred in the accounting department at Laclede Gas. He was an incredible boss, mentor and friend. Fred was quite the athlete and fast ball pitcher.....impossible to hit. Thanks for the memories and Rest In Peace Fred!

We would like to extend our sympathy on the death of Fred Applegate. The Hannibal's who lived on Huiskamp in Jennings are so sorry for your loss of your husband, Fred.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Applegate's passing. He was such a kind man. Every CYC baseball practice and game was fun, positive, and a learning experience. Whoever had to chase down a ball out in a field or a creek was always sent off with a "Hey send a Postcard!" We lived in the same neighborhood, so Mr. Applegate would always give me a lift to and from practice. His son Dave and I probably learned something new from Mr. Applegate every car ride. After college, I'd still occasionally...

We didn't get to see Rosemary and Fred often, but my grandmother, Lorraine Waldhof (Bugg), loved them both so much and talked about them all the time. When we did get to visit, I always had the best time and remember Fred as wonderfully funny and so kind. Love and prayers to Rosemary and her family.

Condolences and prayers to Dave and the Applegate family during this difficult time.
