Fred Bailey, age 83, resident of rural Shelby, died Saturday, September 4, 2010 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a long illness.

Born September 15, 1926 in Gunlock, Kentucky to Kendall and Rosie (Shepherd) Bailey, he had been a Shelby area resident the majority of his life. Mr. Bailey had been employed 37 years with the former Quanex Corporation. He was a member of the Shelby Owls Club, VFW Post #291 and FOE Arie #763. Fred crafted numerous quality knives which were the prized possessions of family and friends. He was also known for his gardening and enjoyed sharing his crop throughout the community.

Survivors include two sons, Rodger (Glenda Findley) Bailey of Shelby; and Gary (Marilyn) Bailey of Mansfield, one daughter, Sharon (Lannie) Tackett of Shelby; and daughter-in-law, Linda Bailey of Shelby; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Delmar Bailey of Shiloh; three sisters, Polly Lacy and Elva Reed of Shelby and Roberta Cole of Mansfield, nieces, nephews, other relatives and his companion, care giver and friend, Jackie Watson of Shelby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Bailey, his former wife Dorothy Bailey, one son, Michael W. Bailey and grandson, Michael R. Bailey, three brothers Frank, Jim and Bert Bailey and one sister Pearl Mize.

Funeral services will be held 11AM Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend Delmar Bailey will officiate with interment in Maple Grove Cemetery, New Haven. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
