Fred Calvin Holt

Fred Calvin Holt, 85, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Friday, October 15, 2010. He was born in Roanoke, Va. and was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Catherine Cammea Harlow Holt; his father, William Dolphus "Dol" Holt; his mother, Flora Samuel Wingfield Holt; his brother, Daniel Stockton Holt and wife, Betty A. Holt; sisters, Helen L. Holt Pickett and husband, Albert L. Pickett, Virginia Holt Young, and husband, Dewey L. Young, and Nellie Holt Wills and husband, Gilmer Wills; and an infant son, Dale Calvin Holt; brothers-inlaw, Sidney Milton "Peck" Harlow, Sr. and extra special brother-in-law, Warren Russell Harlow; special nephew, James H. Scott, III (Jay).

Fred was a graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 1942. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as AMM 2/C (T) in seaplane Squadron VR-8 Carrier Aircraft Service Units (CASU) 23, 21, 67, 21-1. Mr. Holt was a longtime member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. He retired in 1985 from General Electric, Salem, Va., as a production control specialist with 29½ years service.

Surviving are his daughter, Linda Kaye Holt, of Sterling, Va.; special sister-in-law, Mildred Harlow Scott, of Vinton, Va.; special nieces, Frances A. Holt, Lillie Y. Coleman, Wanda Y. Goodrich, Jalean P. Warner, Myra W. Rezzee, Cherie S. Charalambous, and Catherine J. Scott; special nephews, David L. Young, Sidney M. Harlow Jr., Brian K. Harlow, and Rusty Harlow; many other special nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and many loving and caring friends.

Sprouse, a wonderful neighbor who provided support to Fred and Catherine, Margaret H. Camper and Carolyn Barnes. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Gary Robbins and the Rev. Arthur Grant officiating. The interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be by the U. S. Navy. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 18, 2010 at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
