Fred was like a father to me when I was in high school. I was best friends with his daughter Mary and loved her and her mother and father and whole family beyond belief and have prayed and thought about them for the last 40 years...This is indeed a very sad moment for me as I loved and admired him and his family...Love, Mary Lou White Hendricks

Fred Hutchinson had a tremendous impact on improving the quality of care for children with mental health challenges and people with developmental disabilities in the state of Oregon. As the director of Albertina Kerr Centers from 1969 to 1990, he was an innovative leader who helped shift the model of care from institutions to community-based care. What I’ll remember most is how very gracious and helpful he was to me when I succeeded him as director of Albertina Kerr in 1990.

I will probably state this at the public celebration of his life on April 9th, but my warmest and fondest memories of Fred Hutchinson are how much he genuinely cared about people. His daughter, Kathy, and I were classmates in medical school and this was in the days before I had a car and relied on bus transportation to and from where I lived. Typically, Kathy and I would study until fairly late up at the medical school and Mr. Hutchinson would always be there to pick us up no matter what...
