I sailed on an American President Lines ship with Fred in the late 70s. We climbed Mt. Bromo, an active volcano, in Indonesia together. We remained good friends until his passing. My annual Christmas letter was returned this year and I just found out about his passing. He was a lovely man-- one of great humor, intelligence, curiosity, and friendship. Fred touched so many lives with his kindness and gentle spirit. All who knew him have been made for the better. Rest peacefully, dear Fred.

Fred was a singular individual of great wit and wisdom. He also won the coveted lapel pin from NPR by succeeding at Will Shorts' word game on the air. Truly an inspiring person who shall be missed greatly.

Thank you for being a part of my life Fred, you will be remembered in many hearts!
