All through my graduate school days at Northwestern in the 1970's, Fred was my running partner, as well as a mentor. One of my best memories was being a teaching assistant for his (and Bob Garrels') undergraduate course for non-majors called something like "Man's Interference With Natural Chemical Cycles".
