Fred Schmidt Obituary

Fred David Schmidt, "Big Fred", age 49, born in New Orleans on November 1, 1965, passed away peacefully in his sleep listening to his favorite jazz music Thursday evening November 13, 2014. Loving father of Victoria, Tyler and Zachary Schmidt. Loving son of Annelle and Jerry Coupel, and the late Fred J. Schmidt, Brother of Christian (Jacqueline) and David Schmidt, and Noelle Brown (Jonathan). Uncle of Cody, Justin and Elizabeth Schmidt. Grandson of Corliss Schmidt. Also survived by his uncles, Ronald (Renee) and Darryl Rodi, Steven (Patty) and Scott (Staci) Schmidt and aunt, Karen (JW) Wilkerson. Fred's legacy will be his tremendous love for his children. He was a loving, devoted and caring father. Victoria, Tyler and Zachary were the light of his life! Fred will be remembered for his caring heart, big warm smile, great sense of humor, love of jazz music and fabulous cooking. He was also an avid New Orleans Saints, LSU Tigers, and Atlanta Braves fan. Fred would be pleased if you choose to wear any of the colors of his favorite teams. He was a former employee for many years at the Port of Call. His love and passion for life has inspired us all. Fred touched many lives with his larger-than-life personality, which would light up a room when he entered. He was a kind and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He will be loved forever, and missed until we see him again in heaven. A celebration of Fred's life will take place Saturday, November 22, 2014 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 4640 Canal Street, New Orleans. Visitation 10AM with a Funeral service 12pm -12:30pm. Zach and family, I was so sorry when Jut called me with the sad news of your Dad's passing. Jut's PawPaw, Granny and I often set up our chairs and enjoyed watching 100s of innings of Rummel baseball with him. His support was constant and his pride was obvious. I hope when you miss him most your memories will bring you comfort. Our family's thoughts and prayers are with you, Jut's Nanny Dar

So sorry to read about this in this morning's paper. Freddy became my friend during the time I visited Port of Call every Sunday for years. He was always kind, funny and generous. Talked sports and horse racing all the time. Loved his kids, and I helped with donations for the boy's baseball travel teams, he was so very proud of them. I know he was missed when he left Port of Call, and now he'll be missed by all who's lives he touched. RIP big man...Art LeCompte

Fred, You were a big part of my high school years. No matter what was going on, you were there. I still tell my kids about you and me and our pre-game ritual of slapping each other's shoulder pads and helmets and head-butting before every game. I would get so psyched and pumped up, I felt like I could take on anyone. And that was because of you and your energy and enthusiasm. I will never forget it. You will be missed, buddy.
