Freda Wegis Rush 1916 - 2009 Our mother entered life in a remote part of the Cuyama Valley where the closest geographical point was called Ozena. She was the daughter of a German immigrant, Gephard Wegis and one of the first California Families, Rosa Reyes of Ventura. Freda and Melvin had five...

Not sure what to say?

I last saw Freda in November 08 when I visited her home while in Bakersfield. Freda was an honorable, Catholic lady. I thought of her as a good friend of 20 years.

I had the pleasure of being Ms. Freda's (as I always called her)Hairdresser every Fri. @ 1:30 for I think 23 or 24 years. I always looked forward to seeing her beautiful smile, and always had kind words for everyone. In all those years I can not remember ever hearing her say a bad thing about a single soul. Her Family met everything to her. I am so grateful god just let her come home on her terms with no suffering ! we should all be so lucky. I thought it very fitting for such a kind and...

Grandma's home was a safe haven for all of who needed a safe place to escape the chaos of our own families and reality. Her yards were places of orange and apricot trees, forts and secret hideouts. Easter egg hunts, BBQ's, birthday parties and Thanksgiving meals were never better than when held at Grandma's house. She was truly queen of her kingdom and what a special and loving (but always unexpectedly exciting) kingdom it was. She refused to see anything but the best in her family. Her heart...

Grandma gave me my passion for sewing, and although she tried, quilting was just not her thing. She also gave me and my cousins Tracy and Tricia a love of baking; she allowed us full freedom in her kitchen to bake all sorts of goodies, provided there was always a batch of chocolate chip cookies involved. Grandma gave us an appreciation of nature and it's conservancey--she was recycling long before being "green" was in. She gave us a love of characters, both in the novels and stories we...

I remember Freda striding purposefully through the corridors of Wingland. I remember her sense of humor and her humanity. I remember Melvin's cigar as he and Freda drove me to a community theater production starring a fellow faculty member. I remember Freda's generous spirit and dedication to teaching. Basic academics thrived in her classroom: art, music, and PE found a place there, also. I especially valued the art as I cherish a third grade ashtray, and an awkwardly stitched wall hanging...

With your mother gone, it's truly the end of an era for our family. What an amazing journey her life was! My thoughts are with all of you.

I am sad to hear of Freda's passing. The last time I saw her was at St. Philip's about 5 years ago when I was in town visiting family (Adolph & Mary Limi) I have fond memories of visiting your parent's home when I was a child. I send you my thoughts and prayers. I know Freda rests in peace as she is with her Lord.
Sincerely, Kathi Brackeen (Limi)
