Fred was my teacher at USM for a painting class. As a pastelist I really wanted to use my medium and spoke to Fred about it. He allowed me to use pastels IF I would do abstracts. He taught me so much doing that. He was alwsys gentle with his comments. Just a wonderful person to know and have as a teacher. His passing is very sad, but his work and inspiration will be around for ever. He will be missed.

I had the privilege of working with Fred at USM. He was a brilliant and caring teacher and wonderful colleague. He was there for the department and for his students. It pains me to know he is no longer with us. Fortunately his work, soft and sophisticated and full of soul will be with us forever.

Fred was an old Fred that I met thirty five years ago in Portland. He was the established artist and I was young and hungry artist new to town. We shared ideas and had studios in the same building. We shared ideas and encouraged each other . He was a wonderfully quiet and thoughtful man. He had me as a quest artist at USM and I reciprocated at Saint Joseph's . The art world was very small in Maine back then. God bless Fred and his loved ones. He will be missed.

I was saddened to read about Fred's passing, he was one of my favorite art professors at USM. I had the good fortune of taking Fred's design, drawing, and painting classes while a student there. Fred was a thoughtful teacher who shared his extensive knowledge and art passion with his students. I learned so much from him and will be forever grateful. He had high expectations and wanted his students to delve deeper and produce intelligent work. He taught me how to look at nature differently and...

Fred was the most profound and engaging professor of art. It was a gift to learn from him in many classes and I always hear his voice when doing my work. He was an enormous, inspiring influence with a wry sense of humor and a keen sense of how to instruct and challenge. I will remember him always and miss his presence.
