SUTTONS BAY — Frederick Edward Mergos, 67, of Suttons Bay, passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Munson Medical Center.
Fred was born Oct. 5, 1941, in Detroit, the son of Marion and Helen (Kwiecien) Mergos. On Jan. 24, 1969, at St. Peters Church in Harper Woods, he married his loving wife of 40 years, Constance Marie Olkowski, who survives.
Fred graduated from Ferris State University Pharmacy School in 1965.
He was a dedicated pharmacist who loved helping people. Fred would help with good medical advice to the unfortunate who couldn't afford doctor visits.
He had a love of the outdoors; Fred would take the kids skiing to Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands. He would take them on camping trips to Ontario or boating with the guys on the waters. He also loved gardening, especially his tomatoes.
Fred was proud of his Polish descent. He loved polka dancing and was a very good cook of traditional Polish dishes. Lately, he and Connie enjoyed their retirement in Suttons Bay.
Fred is survived by his wife, Connie; a son, Fred (Jennifer) Mergos of Venice, Fla.; two daughters, Heather (Tom) Ames of Macomb and Dr. Lindsay (Dr. David) Best of Charlevoix; eight grandchildren, Molly, Gabriella, Isabella and Lily Ames, Frederick "Max" and Katarina Mergos, David Jr. and Caroline Best; two sisters, Ilene (Gerald) Garman of Suttons Bay, his twin sister, Carol (Richard) Sella of Harrisville; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepfather, Zigmond Nowicki.
Visitation will be held today, Feb. 26, from 2 to 8 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The Mass will be held Friday, Feb. 27, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Michael's Parish of Suttons Bay. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in the spring. The Rev. James Doherty will serve as celebrant.
