Frederick Lee Surbaugh

A first class gentleman. Today is November 5, 2019 and I was searching for friends I served with while in the Army in Germany. Dr. Surbaugh was my Captain when I arrived at the 24th Engr Battalion around September of 1969. I will never forget Fred or Doc Surbaugh as we called him as he was a gentle, fun loving intelligence man who I wish I had traveled to Idaho to see him. Fred and I met in 7th grade at Hosford School in Portland.
We were very active in Boy Scouts, with Fred's outdoor skills and math smarts allowing our Mohawk Patrol of Troop 89 to win the regional Jamboree. He went to Franklin and I went to Benson where we played on our respective freshman football teams. I got chewed out by my coach when I yelled out "Hey Fred" as our teams ran onto the field before a game. The coach told me to keep my friendship off the field. I regarded Fred as my...
