CARRILLO, Gabriel - Crossed over peacefully into the welcoming arms of our Ancestors on January 1, 2007. He was 58 years of age, and a resident of Monte Rio. Cremation services were arranged by Adobe Creek Funeral Home of Petaluma. Gabriel was born July 22, 1948 in San Francisco to Dorothy Carrillo, of Welsh ancestry, and Ernest G. Carrillo, a native of Peru. He attended U.C. Berkeley in the late 1960s, studying Scandinavian and Indian languages. He lived in both Berkeley and San Francisco until 1994 when he moved to Sonoma County, where he was the owner of The Music Corner in Guerneville until he retired in 1996 due to an illness. He was active in the community as a musician, teacher, woodworker, writer, hypnotherapist, and small business owner. He also served on the Sonoma County Commission on AIDS from 2001 to 2006. He was very active in the Society for Creative Anachronism, serving as King of the Western Kingdom in 1969, establishing many rules and awards that are used by the Society to this day. He was also active in the group T.O.P.Y. He was an accomplished musician, playing the harp, piano, and dulcimer. He also enjoyed gardening, particularly cultivating antique roses, and cooking, especially ethnic cuisines including Peruvian dishes from his family's heritage. He is survived by his partner, David Foyt, and by his many students. Gabriel had a profound and positive impact on the lives of many, and he will be dearly, dearly missed, though he lives on vibrantly in our hearts. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service and a celebration of Gabriel's life on Sunday February 11 at 3:00 p.m. in the Odd Fellows Hall, 16219 First Street in Guerneville. A memorial will also be held in Berkeley in late February. Memorial donations in Gabriel's name may be made to Food for Thought, P.O. Box 1608, Forestville, CA 95436.
