On March 27, 1969, Gabriel Stuart Johnson was born to Martha H. Johnson and Dennis S. Johnson in Decatur, Ala. He has one younger brother, Matthew Johnson of Athens, and one younger sister, Sarah K. Johnson, of Decatur. Gabe lived in Athens most of his life and was an alumni of Athens State College.
After graduating with a B.S. in Psychology, Gabe moved to Tuscaloosa where he held a position at Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility as a Bachelor’s level Social Worker. He was also employed as a cook at various restaurants. In 2000, Gabe and his brother, Matthew, moved to Auburn to pursue their dream of recording a music album. They resided in Auburn for approximately four years before returning to Athens.
Gabe “Gannibus” Johnson was a local film artist and enjoyed posting movies on YouTube. He was an avid reader, musician and somewhat of a comedian. He enjoyed comic books and was a very talented artist, both in pen and ink as well as using computer graphics. Gabe also enjoyed playing the bass and acoustic guitar. Gannibus never met a stranger and left behind many, many friends.
Gabriel was a member of Alabama Compassionate Care and was a proponent for medicinal marijuana as well as the decriminalization of marijuana and the reformation of drug laws. He was also interested in forming a chapter of The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws or NORML in North Alabama.
On Wednesday, March 10, 2010, Gabriel Stuart Johnson passed away, while in Decatur at his mothers home, of natural causes. On March 11, 2010, his remains were donated to the Genesis Donor Program through the Medical Education and Research Institute (M.E.R.I.) of Memphis, Tenn. His hair was cut and will be donated to Locks of Love. He will continue to give his life to others even in death.
Gabe leaves behind his mother, Martha H. Johnson of Decatur; his father, Dennis S. Johnson of Athens; his brother, Matthew E. Johnson of Athens; his sister, Sarah K. Johnson of Decatur; uncle, James. L. Johnson of Elkmont; and many other relatives.
Gabe had one surviving grandparent at the time of his death, Ms. Mary R. Hiserodt, or “GrandMary” of Decatur. She passed away the following Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at River City Care and Rehabilitation.
He was the grandson of the late Dorothy L. Johnson, and E. Stuart Johnson, both of Athens, and Edward “Frank” Hiserodt of Wynn, Ark.
A memorial will be held on March 27, 2010, at Athens State University. Gabe would have been 41 years old on this date. The Celebration of life will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. in McCandles Hall’s Auditorium. Those planning to attend are asked to arrive no later than 2:45.
Donations may be made in his honor to Habitat for Humanity; Alabama Compassionate Care; Athens Church of God; The Boys and Girls Clubs of Limestone County; or to founding a chapter of NORML in North Alabama. One may donate to any charity of their choosing as well.

Just missingthe friendship & advice of my 'smiling shaman',i'll be glad when the seemingly tangible reality merges with the subtle energies of that 'beyond the veil' so we may laugh together again-'to make the myths!'

Gabe, it was a pleasure having classes with you at Athens and sitting with you at graduation. You are one of a kind, and I've thought of you often since we had that Shakespeare class together. My prayers go with your family.

Gabe, I have been thinking of you every day since you left us. You even came to me in a dream a few days ago. It was awesome to see you, although it was just a dream. You meant more to me then you will ever know. You were one of kindest, coolest, people I have ever met. I miss you and will remember your smiling face always. Every time I rock out to some groovy tunes, it will be in your memory.
Much Love,
Tiffany

"Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names." ~ Proverb
Gabe, to me, was a very dear friend and kindred spirit. If one ever crossed paths with him, it was impossible to forget him. The beautiful light that surrounded him in life...still surrounds him even in death. I find comfort in the fact that his undying spirit will continue to live on and thrive within us all...
Until we meet again...my sweet dear friend Gabe...

In the words of an acquaintance of his, Gabe was described as a Southerner who spoke with a surfer's dialect, he was unique, an excellent taste in music & "killer" sense of humor, I was privileged to know him from high school & college, I wish I knew him exceedingly.
