1996-2017
Gabriel Joseph Maamari, age 21, resident of Houston passed into our Lord's hands on Sunday, the 11th of June in Houston, due to complications from Crohn's Disease. He was born in Houston, Texas on the 1st of March, 1996.
Gabriel attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana after graduating from L'Ecole d'Humanité in Hasliberg, Switzerland in 2014. Before L'Ecole, he attended the American School of Dubai. Gabriel loved flying and was working on his private pilot's license. He was a passionate explorer of the world and adventured to the far reaches of Nepal, Morocco, Tanzania, Oman, the UAE, Scandinavia, and many others. As a result of his travels, he quickly grew to love savory outings for Indian and Thai food.
From 'funny times' in the back of the car with his brother as little boys to watching Mr. Bean with his sister, who calls him Buzzy, Gabriel loved nothing more than to laugh. He loved and adored his family, particularly deep conversations and belly laughs with his grandparents both in Texas and Lebanon. Gabriel was a kind, gentle, loving, and compassionate soul, who suffered beyond his years. His favorite acronym was 'FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real.' This irreverence for fear was of great service when battling life's challenges.
In his early years, Gabriel spent considerable time outdoors with his beloved dog, Blackie. As an adolescent and young adult he loved hiking with Dad, and as an adult, talking politics with mom. In the past year, he hiked the trails of Appalachia, Colorado, and his favorite Sam Houston National Forest in Texas. He was an avid defender, protector, and supporter of the environment and environmental causes. He took hundreds of amazing photographs of his beloved wilderness.
He is survived by his loving parents, Shirley Golden Maamari and Maher Maamari; brother, Nicholas Maamari; sister, Isabella Maamari; maternal grandparents, Mira Cook and Albert (Bert) Golden; fraternal grandparents, Salam and Joseph Maamari. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, and cousins: Rebecca Golden Timsar & Salim Timsar and children Angelina and Raphael; Courtney & Benjamin Cook and children Savannah, Jonah, and Lucas; Nabil Maamari, and Nada & Elias Abboud and daughter Lara.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening on Friday, the 16th of June, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service will be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 17th of June, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Rev. Jim Jackson is to officiate.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family asks that memorial contributions in Gabriel's memory be directed to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, 5120 Woodway Drive, Houston, Texas 77056 or the Outdoor Alliance, 1255 23rd Street NW Suite 275, Washington, DC 20037.

Shirley, it was thanks to Gabriel that we met. I remember signing Jeremy up for Boy Scouts in Dubai and the two of you were there. He was already tall for his age and he was only in third grade. You were both so nice and you made us feel so welcomed even though, you too, were new to Dubai.
