Not sure what to say?

dearest evelyn,
I remember your mom quite well, she was a beautiful and accomplished woman. My sympathies. Rochelle Markowitz

Vera Orthlieb in the Paris metro station May 2012

In 2007 I came back to Pittsburgh for my 40th high school reunion. After a luncheon given by Sally Broff, I ran into Madame Rosenwasser, my former French teacher, in the elevator. She recognized me immediately and called me by my designated "French name," Juliette. I was amazed at her memory! What a lovely woman she was. How I enjoyed her class! -Vera Kemper Orthlieb, class of 1967 TAHS

A sad day, for her family and her extended family of students. 13 yrs of formal french education, 10 in Pittsburgh, and a tribute to Gaby....I will cry tonight thinking of her.

Dear Evelyn:
My deepest sympathies to you. Your mother was a wonderful French teacher (my student teacher, at the time, was Roxane Stewart Gaal)at Taylor Allderdice. I graduated in 1968. My fondest memory of her, is when she sang "La Vie en Rose" for us, in class. She had such a lovely voice, as well. I tried to reach her, a few years ago, with no success. I simply wanted to let her know how much I admired her, as a teacher. Warmest wishes to you.

(I believe that you might have been...

Mrs. Rosenwasser taught me French 5. Thanks to her when I finally got to France I could speak French. (Even if I never had occasion to speak with a hairpin salesman in Belgium - a sentence we memorized for French class.)

Dear Marc and Evelyn,
Grandma Gabby was one of the nicest people we've had the pleasure of meeting. She was always kind to Michelle and I, and always had the nicest things to say about our 2 boys. We loved seeing her at all of the family events, and were happy to consider her a part of our extended family. She will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Marc:

My sincere condolences to you and your family.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Madame Rosenwasser was my teacher at Allderdice in the 1970's. She encouraged and deepened my passion for French. I'm glad to remember that I did her teaching justice (800 on the ACT), and am sorry I never knowingly saw her since, though our paths might have crossed at Temple Sinai. She touched innumerable lives and clearly lived life to the fullest. I wish all of her family and loved ones comfort now and in the days ahead.
