Read MoreI sat next to Gail in high school classes at a time and place where women in science, and even science itself, were not considered worthy of notice. Although I don't agree with Gail's views on the safety of nuclear power, I admire her devotion to her field and our high school. She was smart, feisty and loving.

I first met Gail when she came into our Opal shop on one of her trips to Melbourne. This chance meeting created a wonderful friendship and we would regularly catch up for lunch or dinner whenever Gail had time in between board meetings. I feel very privilaged to have known such an intelligent, warm, caring and beautiful person. I will always cherish the short time i knew Gail and she will always be in my thoughts. My condolences go out to her family and close friends.

Gai was a colleague of mine at the Environmental Measurements Laboratory. We worked together from time to time and published a joint paper in the Journal of Geophysical Research in 1973.
Our paths diverged after I retired from the lab, and she went on to become its director, a Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner, and then on to bigger and better things. All I ever wanted was to do physics (which I still do). We continued to exchange Christmas cards, and I never forgot her...

We are deeply saddened at the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) to learn of the passing away of Dr. Gail de Planque. Gail has always been very close to us as a former NRC Commissioner, and supporting us in different nuclear activities. All those of us who have worked with her will certainly miss her broad experience, her full dedication and her knowledge and ideas on these subjects. In addition, we will miss her warm and wonderful personality. From NEA perspective she leaves behind a legacy...
