Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

Garry Ray Canaday, age 65, of Linden, passed away peacefully in his home on March 16, 2021. Garry was born on March 20, 1955, in Flint, Michigan to parents Odis and Mary Canaday. He attended Flint Northern High School and began working at the age of 14 for Myron Shelton at Shelton Automotive on Chevrolet Ave. in Flint. His priority was providing for his family with his ultimate goal of achieving retirement from GM Flint Assembly as a proud member of UAW Local 598, which he ultimately achieved. Garry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and especially bow hunting. He was an excellent marksman with both gun and bow. When he wasn’t in the woods, he could be found fishing for steelhead, walleye, or panfish. He also enjoyed golfing, boating, or spending time in the yard perfecting his lawn.

In his later years, Garry shared his time with his two daughters and beloved granddaughter, Harper. He was a man with a keen eye for detail. He was dedicated to serving his union and representing the General Motors brand. His attention to detail made him a valued and respected member of UAW Local 598. He was a true union brother, and a generous man who always shared what he had. Garry was always willing to sit and chat, lend a hand, or spin a tale. His presence will be missed in our home, but his memory will live eternally in our hearts.

He was a member of More Life Tabernacle Church for many years.

Garry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ronald Canaday.

His life will be forever cherished by his surviving children, Paige Canaday and Rachel Schuberg.

Garry is survived by his granddaughter, Harper Schuberg; brothers, Jimmy (Linda) Canaday and Michael Canaday, and several nieces, a nephew, and dear friend, Debbie Brant. Additionally, a special thank you to Julie from Ascension at Home Hospice.

Due to Covid-19 and government regulations, only 25 people will be allowed in the chapel at one time. Mask, group capacity, and distancing guidelines must be practiced.

Open visitation will take place from 11am to 12pm March 20, 2021 at the funeral home.

Private service will be held at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Joshua Arrand officiating.

Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Eternal Affection Arrangement- BASKET INCLUDED

My thoughts and condolences go out to your family. I will always cherish the memories I have as a child coming to visit cousin Gary. I loved coming to his home in Fenton as a child. Whether it be having Rachel babysit me, his 4th of July get together, or just stopping over with my dad, it was always a great time. You will be deeply missed cousin Gary!
