Colonial Funeral Home of Scott County - Weber City Obituary

Nickelsville, VA – Gary Addington, age 74

Gary Ford Addington, 74 of Nickelsville, VA passed away on September 14, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.  A native of Nickelsville, he was a beloved figure in his community.  Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Ford Addington and Thelma Elaine McClellen.

He leaves behind his son, Todd Addington and daughter-in-law Beth and his cherished grandson, Wyatt.  He is also survived by his sister Betty Broadwater and her husband Phil; niece, Melissa Mendenhall and her husband Randy and his special friend and love, Anne Wise.

Gary was proud to be the first graduate of Twin Springs High School, where he made a name for himself on the basketball court as the first player to score 1,000 points.  His love for the game never faded, and he later graduated from Lincoln Memorial University before starting his teaching and coaching career.  Over 30 years, he dedicated himself to mentoring students, teaching them not just in the classroom but also how to drive and serving as a role model to countless young people.  After retiring from teaching, Gary spent the next 23 years as a realtor, helping to sell many tracts of land throughout Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee.   The past few years, he worked closely with his friend and partner, Steven Hobbs, who is set to take over his real estate business.  Gary was passionate about sports, including basketball, tennis, and golf, and he also loved the outdoors, spending time hunting and fishing.  He cherished his friendships, especially with his lifelong friends Dennis Hillman and Doyle Smith, with whom he shared many adventures.

There will be a graveside service at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Temple Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Steve Collins officiating.  Music will be provided by Michael Taylor.  The pallbearers will be John Carter, Scott Corder, Tony Dean, Reggie Green, Jeffrey Meade, Kevin Warner, and Steven Hobbs.  Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Hillman, Doyle Smith, and Dwayne Mays. Those wishing to attend the graveside are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 PM.

Gary’s impact on his community, his love for family and friends, and his dedication as a teacher, coach, and mentor will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959

Great guy. Great to work with

Everyone here at Signature Properties absolutely loved Gary. He was always kind, generous, and in a good mood. Always ready to help others. He was truly an honorable and amazing man and he will be missed greatly. We all send our condolences to the family during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary's family during this difficult time. I'll truly miss our conversation. Such a nice person.

We were fortunate to meet and visit many prospective properties with Gary. He was a pleasure to know and talk with. He was a true gentleman and an honest businessman. We pray Gary is now residing in his forever home of Heaven.

A big influence on all of us back in high school and a great guy. Deepest condolences and prayers for you all Todd. God bless.

Gary was a wonderful person. He was friendly and loved people. He was caring and helpful to all. He practiced good stewardship. He was a wonderful businessman as well. He was a faithful friend. So thankful he is in heaven living the dream with king Jesus Christ.

I had the pleasure of being a peer tutor for 7th graders my senior year. They placed me with Mr. Addington for P.E/Health. He was always so generous and kind. My mother knew him when she was in school and he was still teaching by the time I got to high school. I’m thankful for the short time I had the privilege to get to know him a little before graduating. My deepest condolences to his loved ones he left behind to carry on his legacy.

Mr. Addington was a huge part of my teen years and even after I graduated, he remembered me. He made our gym class fun, always had a smile and a “hey how are you?” Todd, I’m so sorry for your loss. Loosing a parent is so hard. Prayers for you all.

Im so sorry to hear about Gary passing . He was a wonderful man. I knew him when he was a teacher at Gate City. Every time I saw him he was smiling. Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers.
