Helping the Unfortunate

Never judge a broker by his collar. Take Gary Albero. He was a good insurance broker: urbane and vigorous, and he could sell. That's what led him to 2 World Trade Center for a breakfast meeting. But it was not the money or the numbers that appealed to him, said his wife, Aracelis. "He liked talking," she said. "He liked people and the job fit him."

Consider the private life of Gary Albero, who was 39 and lived in Emerson, N.J. He often volunteered at a local homeless shelter and sometimes slept there because he was interested in the lives of the homeless. He would come home, put on a white collar and go off to conquer Wall Street.

Gary Albero met a boy some years ago who came from a troubled family. Mr. Albero took him under his wing, took him to ball games and coached him in football.

When it was time for the young man to go off to college, Mr. Albero was there to help pack his belongings and drive him to his dormitory. They hugged; the man gave the boy some money and reminded him that he could be anything he wanted to be.

The Alberos had their own child, a boy, a year and a half ago. "That was the happiest day of his life," Mrs. Albero said.

Not sure what to say?

I had the privilege of wearing Gary’s memorial tag on 9/12/21 on a motorcycle ride that had over 1000 motorcycles on what was called a Ride to a Remember out of Woodstock Illinois. It was police escorted to Oak Brook Illinois to what is called the Healing Field where there were American Flags for each lost person in 9/11. It was a very special day and really meant a lot to me to be able to carry Gary’s memorial card with me during that ride. Never forgotten!

Remembering Gary on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Today I was home and for the first time since you passed I heard your name read out loud. 19 years and it is still hard to wrap my head around the loss. The day that changed the world. You were a big presence in life and obviously enough that you are still thought of in such a positive way. I know you are doing good works on the other side because that was your calling here. God Bless.

Gary, a classmate, a friend, a true hero in life.

I feel saddened by your untimely passing on September 11th. May you RIP....

Thinking about you. I was going through old pictures and found some from the 1980s. LOL! Good memories of fun times. ❤

I still think about you Gary, every year at this time. We were classmates, friends, you had that contagious laugh and crazy sense of humor. And that WILD hair! I wish your son could have known the man that you were, but I know you're his angel in heaven. We miss you here, but will see you soon....peace to you and your family, especially Ari. Bernadette

Rest in Peace Gary, God bless your family and friends.
