Gary Blakeman

I was saddened to hear about Gary´s passing.The first thing that comes to mind about Gary was what a leader he was! Anyone that had the good fortune to spend any time with him came away a better person. Looking back on my time in Sumter, I realize how influential he was on both my career and life. He really seemed to enjoy giving young people opportunities and helped guide them to succeed. I feel privileged to have had that opportunity. He will be missed.

I had the privilege of meeting Gary (Mr. Blakeman as we always addressed him) in 1980 when he came to Sumter as Plant Manager for BD. I worked for him for many of the years he was at BD. Gary was a great leader and a great mentor. I along with countless others can thank Gary for spending the time to develop our skills and guide us throughout our careers. After he retired, Gary and I became friends for the last 18 years of his life. Gary was more like a father figure to me as I always ask him...
