Gary Deiters Obituary

DEITERS, Gary Edward Gary Edward Deiters, age 81, died peacefully in his sleep on July 12, 2015 at his home in Marietta, Georgia. Gary is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Van Deiters; his children Michael, Brian, Lori, Barry, and Daryl; his brother Richard Deiters; and his sisters Peggy Cashin and Karen Lindberg. He is preceded in death by his brothers Donald and David Deiters and sister, Barbara Spera. Gary was born on June 20, 1934 in Atlanta, Georgia to parents Augustus and Margaret Deiters. He graduated from Brown High School in 1952 and the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1957 with a Degree in Textile Engineering. Gary began his career with the U.S. Army Reserves in Aberdeen, MD and accepted his first professional position at Chemstran Corporation in Pensacola, FL. In 1959 he moved back to Atlanta, GA where he accepted a position with Pioneer Heddle and Reed, Co. in East Point, GA where he worked more than 17 years. Gary was a great family man, a loving father and a man of great faith. He married Martha in 1957 and they 5 had children together. As his kids were growing up, Gary hired several neighborhood boys to work at Pioneer on a part time basis, providing them with their very first job. Gary enjoyed college football, college basketball, and professional baseball. Gary loved Georgia Tech and wanted to attend the school at an early age. As a child, Gary often slept wearing his Georgia Tech "rat cap". Gary was a tremendous fan of Georgia Tech sports. In November 1975, the Atlanta Journal Constitution interviewed Gary and published a full page article highlighting Gary's love of Georgia Tech along with a competing Georgia Bulldog fan. As Mr. "Yellow Jacket" Gary was often quoted as saying he wanted to be buried at Grant Field when he passed. His family and friends will always remember him as a man with a sharp mind, detailed oriented, witty, and someone with an incredible sense of humor. A viewing will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill Funeral Home, 1157 Old Canton Road, Marietta, GA 30068, Thursday July 16, 2015 from 6-8p.m. A funeral mass is scheduled for Gary at Holy Family Catholic Church on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 11a.m. with a reception to follow at the church. Monsignor Edward J. Dillon from Holy Spirit Catholic Church will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gary's life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, 760 Pollard Blvd, SW, Atlanta, GA, 30315 (404-688-9515).

My late father (James Slaton) was also a Tech grad. Class of 1948 Textile engineer. (lost three years to WWII) I heard him often speak highly of Gary. You never know how a person can touch another persons life. May the good Lord comfort the Deiters family.

Growing up in West End, I always looked forward to being around Gary. He was the best sports fan I ever knew - knew every athlete from Brown High, Georgia Tech, Georgia, the Braves - you name him, Gary would have a story, and would tell it with a funny twist. What a wonderful friend and man. Martha and family, we may never have told you how much we loved Gary as a friend, and it is a shame that it takes a loss like this to bring out our true feelings in words that would buoy your soul. I hope my words do that now, and I pray that God will soothe your crushed emotions and bless you with courage to face a Gary-less future, but brightened with memories of a life well lived and appreciated by us all who are patches on the Brown High quilt.

Greetings to all,
My name is Michael D. Skelton and I lived on the other end of Pine Valley Circle and knew Mr. Deiters from being friends with his sons, Michael and Brian. Mr Deiters was always very tolerant of us kids as we hung out in his basement many times over the years in the early and mid eighties. We put him and Mrs. Deiters through more hell than he deserved but he put up with us probably more than he have should. Mr. Deiters was a nice and gracious man and I will never forget him for that quality. I have many fond memories of him at that time.
I was one of those kids that Mr. Deiters hired at Pioneer Heddle and Reed and I am very appreciative that he did that for me and gave me that chance. I would see him at work on some of those days and he would always stop by and ask how I was doing and to check on me to see if I was doing okay. He was a nice man and I always have always hoped that somehow knew how highly I thought of him. We live and learn as we grow older
My heart goes out to my friends, Brian and Michael and the entire Deiters family. May you now find peace knowing that he is at peace with the lord in the kingdom of heaven. I know these times are tough and will continue to be difficult as you all deal with the grief over the loss of your beloved father. May God be with you and God Bless you.
Your friend,
Michael D. Skelton
