Died as he lived: quietly, calmly and with equanimity, his wife Jean Leathers and dog Jooli by his side on April 5th from stroke. At 69, he was at the peak of his life, running in the Cleveland Metroparks, shopping at the West Side Market, reading at Erie Island Coffee, canning jams, roasting...

Not sure what to say?

One of the best professors I ever had at Cleveland State. He was a gift to the English department and a true scholar of Popular Culture.

I was so saddened to hear this. I met him 40 years ago at the age of 19 at Cleveland State. He was my English professor, but he taught me so much more; kindness, respect for people in all walks of life, to be open minded and understanding. Anything good about me is a direct result of his influence. I try to pay this forward whenever I can because there is no way I could ever pay him back for what he did for me. I'm humbled and honored to have known him.

I am so happy that I met the man, Gary. A more kind hearted person, I know not. A talented artist and brilliant mind in so many ways, for sure. A true soulmate with Jean, without a doubt. Fond memories, let them live forever in your heart.

It has been a joy and a privilege to know both Jean and Gary. Prayers for continued peace.

oh Jean I'm so very sorry for your loss.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Jean, I am so sorry for your loss. Gary sounds like a terrific guy as I know he was, married to you. Please feel my hug around you,
Lee Nielsen

When I came back to school to pursue a post-bac teaching certificate in English, I had Gary as my professor for one of the American Lit survey classes. It had been six years since I took my BA, and for several weeks that first quarter back I felt like a fish out of water. I count Gary among a small handful of people whose teaching and guidance helped me to reintegrate into the academic world.

God speed, Gary.

What s sorrow. He had so much to continue to add to our lives. I pray his riches continue in realms we do not know. Love to you, dear Jean., Naomi
