Gary Lynn "Bear" Gerbrandt

1936 - 2025

Gary Lynn Gerbrandt, age 88, of Reedley, California, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025. He was born on November 15, 1936, in San Jose, California, to Bernhart "Ben" Gerbrandt and Geraldine "Gerry" Gerbrandt.

Gary graduated from Salinas High School in 1954, attended Hartnell College in Salinas, and later earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from San Jose State University.

Throughout his life, Gary was deeply committed to public service. He served his communities in many roles, including police officer, teacher, school superintendent, city council member, and mayor in the cities of San Jose, Soledad, Lockwood, and Salinas, California.

Known affectionately as "Bear" by many, Gary cherished time spent with his family and friends. He had a special passion for fishing, cheering on and spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoying jazz music. He also loved writing poetry, cooking, barbecuing, and caring for his beloved wife, Joanne. Above all, Gary had a deep and abiding love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gary was married to Joanne for over 56 years and lovingly cared for her until her passing in September 2018. He is survived by his daughters Julie (and husband Steve Rey) and Amy (and husband Keith Wiley), as well as his grandsons Ben and Nate Rey.
A celebration of Gary's life will be held on October 23, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church.

Gary will be remembered for his warm laughter, bright smile, positive spirit, and deep faith in Christ. He leaves behind a legacy of putting God first, family second, and others before himself. His kindness and compassion touched many lives, and he had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome and loved. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
