Gary Fernell Grimes passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on April 10, 1950, in Washington D.C., to his parents, the late Juanita and Decatur Grimes, Gary Fernell Grimes was a handsome, smooth, and composed man, always known for his impeccable presentation and energetic spirit. He possessed a truly contagious bright smile that could light up any room. He was a man who truly believed he could do anything he set his mind to, and often proved it.
Gary dedicated 21 years of his life to serving the community as a police officer for the Metropolitan Police Department, retiring as a Sergeant. After retiring, he continued to challenge himself and learn new things, becoming a successful real estate agent.
Beyond his professional life, Gary Fernell Grimes was known for his vibrant spirit and love for life. An avid hunter and fisherman, he found immense peace and joy in the outdoors, spending countless hours in nature, particularly in Virginia, pursuing these passions. He also had a passion for gardening, cultivating beauty and life with his own hands, and enjoyed the freedom of horseback riding. Around 20 years ago, he discovered a deep passion for hand dancing, even participating competitively, embracing every opportunity to hit the dance floor and share his infectious energy. He also loved playing games, especially backgammon, and was a constant presence playing Words with Friends.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved son, Daryl Grimes and his wife Joyce; his cherished daughter, Candice Epps and her wife Aleisha; and his adored granddaughter, Zari Epps, who was truly the apple of his eye. He is also survived by his brother, Reginald Grimes, and his wife Henrietta; who have two children (Jonathan and Jeremy), along with a host of extended family and friends.
