When I graduated from high school in Topeka, Kansas in 1956, I applied and was hired to go with the Hammtown wheat harvest as a combine driver. We started cutting wheat on the Waggoner Ranch near Vernon, Texas and closed the season near Bowman, North Dakota. Coincidentally, my last name is Bowman. As I remember, the pay was ten dollars per day and if you stayed on the job for the whole season, the pay was twelve dollars per day. I remember Gary Hamm as a friendly but firm boss.
