Rindskopf-Roth Funeral Chapel - Saint Louis Obituary

Gary Martin Horowitz, MD, 71, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. He is survived by his wife Kari (Karen) Kovach Horowitz and his children Alexander Horowitz and Rachel (Christopher Fisher) Horowitz. Beloved son of the late Israel M. Horowitz and Betty J. Muranyi Horowitz. Loving brother of the late Jo-Ann Horowitz Monjeau. Additionally, he leaves behind his beloved dogs Bellatrix and Gypsy.

Gary was born May 28, 1952 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. He attended Julliard School of Music, graduated from Sayville High School in 1970 and the Air Force Academy in 1974. After flying C130s for the Air Force for 9 years, he realized his dream of serving his community as a physician and went to the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, class of 1985. He served his residency in Obstetrics - Gynecology at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas at Lackland Air Force Base. He served in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Wanting to help infertile patients with their infertility, he completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Mt. Sinai Center in New York City. He worked in an academic format in multiple places across the United States, both as a division director of REI and as resident coordinator. During his career, he received multiple awards and accolades for his teaching and practice.

Gary was an avid football fan and loved attending hockey games with his beloved daughter Rachel. He shared his love for European soccer with his loving son Alexander.  Gary was a voracious reader and passed his love for literature on to his children. He and his wife Kari loved cooking together, caring for their dogs, documentaries and exploring museums.

Graveside service Sunday, October 22, 1:00pm at United Hebrew Cemetery, 7855 Canton Avenue.  Gary fell in love with Africa after visiting with his son in 1995 and wanted to help further the education and wellbeing of the people there. He funded medical students through their education in Kenya. Contributions in Gary’s memory may be made to The Samburu Project (https://thesamburuproject.org/).

Not sure what to say?

Dr. Gary Horowitz was a great doctor and friend. He delivered my youngest son, Aaron who is now 34 years old and married with a six year old son, Kennedy. He will be sincerely missed by all.

Kari, Alexander and Rachel, Sorry to learn of Gary's passing. We were roommates in 26th Squadron Freshman year at the Academy. We had many discussions on politics and religion during that stressful year. We just missed each other in 1985 as I was leaving my Radiology residency and he was just starting OBGyn. May you find peace and understanding in the coming days.

Gary was an awesome mentor and friend to so many, myself included. The world has lost a great man.

Witz was an AMAZING mentor who had a gift of being able to make the complicated seem simple. You were one of the best teachers I had in residency! You will be missed.

Witz was one of a kind, a great mentor for us newby Ob-Gyns. He will be missed.

Rest in peace Dr. H. You were without a doubt, the most respectful physician to your staff and patients I have ever worked with. On top of that, you were an amazing person. You will be missed. My condolences to Kari, Alexander, and Rachel.

Godspeed my friend and colleague. I so enjoyed the privilege of being your embryologist at MU and helping so many people through infertility. You were a definite gift to this world and will be missed.
