Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

HOWD, GARY ALAN – Of Linden, age 76. Gary and his beloved canine companion, Milo, were suddenly taken from us on October 25, 2017 as the result of an automobile accident in Lapeer County.

Cremation has taken place.

Gary was born October 11, 1941 to the late Edward and Bertha (Schuetz) Howd in Flint and resided there until moving to Linden in 2013. He was employed by AC Spark Plug until his retirement. Gary loved his family and having them all together, especially to share meals. His family is so grateful to have recently shared a birthday dinner to celebrate him.

Gary will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Gay, and his children Guy Howd (Cassandra Greene) of Grand Blanc, Greg Howd of Linden, and Gina (Keith) Laajala of Fenton. Gary’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him great joy.  They were special to him, and he was special to them. Beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Corissa Howd (Luke Lewandowski) of Linden, Brianna Howd of Liberty, S.C., Noah Laajala of Fenton, Jaylon Berry and Carmen Portillo of Linden and Harlow Howd of Grand Blanc. Also surviving Gary is his brother Richard Howd of Gaines.

Gary was always willing to assist others without hesitation, even in death as a Gift of Life donor.  His granddaughter described him as “not only the most supporting, caring, dependable and giving person in my life, but my children's as well. He has been there for all of us.” In keeping with Gary’s spirit, his family encourages you to show love and kindness to those you know, and more importantly, those you do not.

In keeping with Gary’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial celebrating his life will take place at a later date.

Gary was such a kind, giving, peaceful man. We were neighbors in Flint for 11 years. He was like a Grandpa to my 2 girls and they loved him dearly. Milo was my buddy and I always enjoyed spending time with them both. Gary was always there for us when we needed him. My family will miss him terribly. Many prayers to Gay and the rest of his family.
