MCDOWELL, Gary Linn, 72, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021. Much has been and will be written about his professional accomplishments, but for those of us who were lucky enough to have had him in our lives, it is his kindness and generosity and wicked sense of humor that...

Not sure what to say?

Three years have passed, wow. I remember Gary sitting in the fraternity house telling us how he wanted to be a commercial fisherman on a big boat. He´d pretend to spot a big school of fish and then he´d scream, "Tuna!!!" Really got us all laughing.

Brenda, so it has been a year since your Gary went on from this earth! I am still so sorry that you lost him and hope that you are finding your way through life. You sent a photo once of Gary and your dog and I thought that was such a great photo! I know that you are doing well and being strong and rebuilding your life. I think of you often! Love ya, Linda!

I just heard the news--in the course of a conversation with James Ceaser, who spoke very highly of him as a constitutional scholar, as the man most responsible for introducing/restoring the word "originalist" to public constitutional discourse. He presented American and British political and judicial wisdom in a thorough and...

I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. McDowell's passing. I first had him as a professor during my freshman year in 2005 where he provided me with some of the toughest (and fairest) academic love I've ever received. I was so thankful for the impact he had on my development as a student and a thinker that he was later an advocate for me in my political internships and an advisor to my Honors Thesis. Of all of the teachers I have had, he had a truly profound role in my growth and my success. I know...

Dear Brenda, I am so sorry for your loss. I can see the love you and Gary have for each other. He must have been a wonderful person. I´m sorry I never got to meet him. I am so happy that you have had such a successful career and loving marriage. My love and prayers for you.

Brenda, I am sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I have no words that will take away the pain. I emphasize with you as I lost my helpmate a couple of months ago. She died of a heart attack. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My heart is broken for you sweet friend. You and your family are in my prayers, Brenda
