Larger-than-life radio personality Gary Michaels (née Rau) passed away Thursday, April 6. Born May 29, 1951, in Baltimore, MD, Gary knew he wanted to be a DJ by age 5. Not sure what to say?

I so much enjoyed his radio show on WQCM in Hagerstown, MD.

I joined the the staff of WLPL to do the all-night show in 1973. Gary preceded me 7-midnight. He came up with an ingenious plan to take on our AM competition...WCAO. He would tightly wrap about 2 inches of Scotch Tape around the capstan of both turntables. So every current song we played, always a 45 RPM, would actually be heard at 45 1/2 or 46 RPM. It wasn't fast enough to sound like The Chipmunks but a listener, being familiar with that current hit, would subconsciously think it was "slow"...

My great regret is that I never had a chance to meet Gary. I know that he was the light of my cousin Bob's life. The Angels must be dancing in Heaven today, with Gary spinning the discs.

He was my inspiration for a mass communications degree and professional career as a radio DJ at KYYI and KLUR in Wichita Falls, Texas as well as working alongside him at WKMZ in Martinsburg. He was most importantly one of the greatest uncles I couldhave ever asked for. I am forever greatfull he was able...

It was usually outside somewhere of inside cold and wet; along with our three boys (our cats except not outside) all together. This was our family time that most people today not take the time to do. This time is what builds a family as...

Gary was funny, smart, kind, and always willing to share his knowledge and love of radio. He was one of the first people I remember really teaching me something about the business. He had a tremendous impact on me and I am sure his legacy will be carried on by countless others.
