Hawthorne Funeral Home - Mount Vernon Obituary

Gary J Navert, 70 of Burlington, WA passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 5th 2013.

He was born in Mount Vernon, and graduated from BEHS the class of 1960. Using his strong work ethics, he began his life's career picking berries for Sakuma Brothers, fueled and serviced cars at Jim Neff Texaco, repaired broken VW's for Mr. Harold Schuur, a field mechanic on the pea viner's set for Stokely Van Camp, and drove truck for Skagit Valley Trucking, saving his hard earned cash to pay his education at Western Washington University, achieving a Masters in Physics in 1969.

His new career began working at the US Navy research and development center in Pasadena, CA, until its closure, when he transferred to the Navy facility at Keyport, WA, working there until his retirement in 2002. He worked for various contractors, developing and writing technical documents for the Navy's underwater torpedo. His greatest achievement was in 1986 as the lone civilian contractor traveling with an elite group of Navy personal to the Arctic Circle to test his torpedos under the ice during the Cold War.

Gary loved working on his cars and collecting old stuff. He could tell you where every wrecking yard or junk store was in the Western United States, as he loved a great road trip. Gary also was instrumental in organizing the annual car swap meet for the North Cascade Street Rod Association (NCSRA), initiated a scholarship fund on behalf of the NCSRA members to the Skagit Valley College Automotive Technology Program, and made sure the Dairy Bar was setup and in working order at the county fair for the Skagit County Dairy Women.

Gary is preceded in death by father John, and his mother Thelma.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janet, son Phil, sisters Laurel (Loyal) Idso, Karen (Richard) Gabriel, brothers David (Jeani), and Richard (Robin), along with many cousins, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces, as he loved them all.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at 11 AM at the Edison Lutheran Church, 14201 Church Rd Bow, WA. A burial service will be held prior at the Bow Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be designated to the Edison Lutheran Church Building Fund, or to the Gary Navert Hotrod Scholarship Fund at the Skagit Valley College Automotive Technology Program, attn: Scott Hall, 2405 East College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.

Tractor-Milk Can Seat

The seat Gary made and gave Janis and me for our wedding present is still serving us well, now in Tucson, 48 years later. Rest in peace old buddy.

Notes from a Niece -
I will always be grateful for Uncle Gary Because...
When I was in 3rd grade I got to disney land because he and aunt janet lived in pasadena.

Because of uncle Gary - I kinda know what a torpedo is...

Because of Uncle Gary I know how to antique - he taught me lines like "how little will you take for that" and "is that the best you can do?"

because of Uncle Gary I have a mailbox cemented into the ground like no other in town that...

Gary Navert was truly a special person. He took the time to think about and anticipate another's needs. A few years ago, while getting ready for a family reunion (that would be a couple hundred Norwegians), Gary called me and asked if I could use another refrigerator for the event. Needless to say, the answer was affirmative, and Gary delivered the refrigerator and came and picked it up after. I don;t know if he knew just how much I appreciated his thoughtfulness. Thanks again Gary. ...

To the Navert Family
I was so sorry to read of Gary's passing. I was his barber for almost 10 years, first in Suquamish and later Kingston. I have thought of him many times since he moved to Burlington. I always enjoyed our times together and have two wonderful clocks that he made to remember him by. A truly nice man.

Janet and Phil
Gary and I met at the Pasadena Lab in 1070/71. We became friends and coworkers primarily working on torpedo programs. Our working relationship continued until 1993 when torpedo programs moved east from San Diego. Gary was a huge part of my 1986 ICEX team which spent 35 days doing special testing while living in a tent on an ice floe in the Beaufort Sea. The team had to attend Navy Cold Weather survival training run by the USNavy Seals. It was a very special and unusual...

Janet and Phil -
I read these other comments and am pleased that the brother I knew and loved was valued by so many friends. He had many talents, one was his ability to enrich other lives. He will be missed but never forgotten.
Richard, Robin, Robert, Soctt, and Ryleigh Navert

Life will never be the same. I miss you so much.

Janet and Phil,
We are sorry to hear of your loss. Gary was a delightful person to work with at Keyport. His knowledge of torpedo systems was unsurpassed, and that knowledge was tapped numerous times. Gary was eager to give the latest scoop on Phil's activities, from the Comet to the current road construction project. Gary's mechanical abilities were first-rate. Condolences to the family.
