Stockton, CA
September 5, 1949 - April 29, 2006
Gary A. Scannavino lost his battle with cancer, Saturday, April 29, 2006 at home surrounded by family. Gary was born September 5, 1949 in Stockton, CA to Al and Madaline Scannavino. He attended St. Mary's High School graduating in 1967 and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree at the University of the Pacific. Gary owned and operated Cherokee Freight Lines since 1966. Gary farmed cherries and walnuts in San Joaquin and Kern Counties but his true passion in life was trucking. He started Cherokee Freight Lines when he was 16 years old and ran Al Scannavino Trucking upon his fathers death in 1972. Gary was an accomplished mechanic and wasn't afraid to get dirty. He never asked anyone to do a job he wouldn't do himself. He gave his best effort in everything he did, nothing was ever done poorly. Gary was a member of the California Trucking Association and the American Trucking Association where he served on numerous boards. He was an avid hunter, he especially loved duck hunting and dove hunting with his family and friends. He enjoyed rooting for the 49ers and Joe Montana through their glory years. He was a loving husband, devoted father and a loving "Nonno".
He is survived by his wife, Leanne (Bozzano) Scannavino, who he met in 1966 and married in 1972; his children, Angela (Adam) Karp, Albert (Monica) Scannavino; his grandchildren, Damon and Sophia Karp and Gary Scannavino; his mother, Madaline Scannavino; his sister, Carol Scannavino and her son, Matthew Gillette; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lolita and I extend sincere condolences to the Scannavino family. It turns out that I saw Gary quite often. Usually driving one way or another down Cherokee Road. Recently, he was on our street and stopped. We talked for about ten minutes. Having conversations like this were always significant and pleasant. I just wanted to say that I both respected and liked Gary Scannavino.
