My condolences to the Ness family. Gayl was a dude. Smart, kind, warm hearted. I remember a dinner with the family back when I was at the U and Eric was home from the far east. I felt like a member of the family and it touched my heart. Love to you all.

Gayl was an inspiration and a great mentor while I was at the University of Michigan and after. He co-chaired my dissertation project and we co-authored several publications and co-edited a book on Populations & Environment. We pioneered early scholarship introducing organizational sociology to international organizations and international relations. I have always remembered his advice when it comes to providing generous support to younger scholars, "pass it on." I am forever grateful.

"Professor Ness, my mentor, has given me opportunities from 1999 to 2023. From the chance to travel to the USA to study STELLA, took a part of Ph.D. dissertation, postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan, managing the faculty, from Associate Dean to Dean. Professor Ness had a deep love with Thailand, especially Khon Kaen. We met every year, with the most recent being around 2022, when he celebrated his birthday in Khon Kaen.
