Gene S. Wandel

Gene was the consummate lady who always had a smile and time to say hello. Such a warm and genuine personality. I will miss her.

It was my good fortune to be a student of Mrs. Wandel’s at Jackson High School for my entire tenure there: in home room, in Journalism, Newspaper and Great Books. My senior year in 1973, when I was newspaper co-editor, Mrs. Wandel led our Reflector News staff to attain national prominence by being awarded the Pacemaker Award, given to the top high school publication in the country by the National Scholastic Press Association.

I very much enjoyed the time I got to spend with Gene at Countryside Grand. She was such a kind person who was always so appreciative of even the most mundane gesture. I will miss seeing her bundled in her red coat near the Grand entrance waiting for a ride to go hit the town. Her presence will definitely be missed.

It breaks my heart to get this news today. I was a member of Mrs. Wandel's first Reflector News staff at Jackson High. Not only did she become my favourite teacher, she set me on the path to majoring in Journalism, becoming a Journalism educator, advising award-winning scholastic publications, and modeling so much of what I was and did as a teacher after the examples she set for me.
