George W. Cry, 83, of Slidell died Monday, April 15, 2013 in Slidell.
Tau Beta Pi, and a fellow with The American Meteorological Society.
Born May 16, 1930 in Hubbard, Texas, to Jack and Inez Cry, George received a bachelor?s degree in Engineering from The University of Texas after two years at Baylor University and then went to work for The National Weather Service in Washington D.C. George then obtained a Master?s Degree in Meteorology from Rutgers University. George maintained a career with The National Weather Service that spanned over forty years.
George was a caring husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed reading, investing, and betting the horses. If George told you where a hurricane would make landfall, rest assured that is where it came ashore. George had a passion for science, the weather, and the study of climatology and hydrology. A member of Tau Beta Pi, he also received a distinguished honor as a fellow of The American Meteorological Society.
From 1981 thru 1994, Mr Cry served the Hydrologist in Charge at the Lower Mississippi River in Slidell where he was recognized as an expert at forecasting the mighty Mississippi River. In 1992, he received the prestigious George Mitchell Award for Operational Meteorology from the American Meteorology Society In addition to receiving many individual awards, the Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center received Bronze Medal from the National Weather Service under his leadership.
George is survived by wife Irma, and sons James, Geoffrey, David and Mitchell Cry. He is also survived by daughter-in-laws Jaymee and Kelly, and grandchildren Kevin, Alexander, Annika, and Brennan Cry. He is proceeded in death by his parents Jack and Inez Cry, and a grandson, Logan.
Services for Mr. Cry will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 360 Robert Blvd Slidell, LA 70458 on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 10:00am. In thanksgiving for the life and career of George Cry, my supervisor at Lower Miss. River Forecast Center from 1990 to 1993. A great man, great mentor, and inspiration for my career in the NWS. My thoughts and prayers of sympathy for his family, we will miss him greatly.
