Obituary

Furney, George I. Age 75, passed away peacefully after a long illness on March 1st. He was born in Princeton, MN to George & Dorothy Furney. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Phyllis. Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Patty; sons, Jeff and John; grandchildren, Danielle (Andy) Herda, and their children, Alayna and Isabel, John (Nina) Furney, and Kelly Furney; also loving family members, Chris and Dale Schraeder; many nieces and nephews. George was a Korean War Veteran. After serving his country he graduated from St. Cloud Teachers College in 1952. He received his Masters Degree at Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1960. In 1980 he received an Administration Degree from the University of Minnesota. His life was spent in the Minnesota Public Schools beginning at Rush City, MN, 5 years at Princeton MN, and 31 years in the Edina School System. Interment Tuesday March 7, 10 AM at Fort Snelling National Cemetery (Lane #2). Visitation 11 AM. Memorial Service 12 Noon at Transfiguration Lutheran Church, 11000 France Ave S, Bloomington.

We were saddened to read of George's death. He was one of the true "good guys". Anecdotes abound of his devilish sense of humor, his wit, and his attitude. After he had retired, I remember his coming back to the smokers' corner of the high school, and relating the many benefits of being retired. Some of them are even printable, but not here.
George will be missed remembered, and appreciated by those of us who knew him.

Mr. Furney was a constant source of support and easy good humor. He loved the students at Valley View and made every effort to know every student on a first name basis. If I remember correctly, any concern was met with a confident, "no problem." I recall his williness to take part when the faculty played the girls volleyball team. I also know he donated books to the Jefferson garage sale, only to buy them back because he hadn't read them yet.

To George's wonderful family- I worked with George in the Edina Schools. As a matter of fact I introduced him at the school celebration held in honor of Al and George as they retired together. I was in my early years in the district and as a new teacher- his support and listening ear was invaluable. So many times I have thought of some funny story he would tell that helped me to keep perspective. He reminded me many times that family should come first. He treasured you all so! As word...
