George Hannie Obituary

George Joseph Hannie, Jr. There are times in life, for which we are not prepared, that remind us that life is to be lived to the fullest. The loss of our beloved George was one such event. George Joseph Hannie Jr., 51, of Houston was suddenly taken from us on November 7th 2014.
On November 19th 1962 he was born to the late Dr. and Mrs. George Hannie Sr. in Lake Charles, LA, as the youngest of eight children. He graduated from Barbe High School before moving to Lafayette to attend the University of Southwest Louisiana. There, at USL, George experienced the two most formidable changes of his life; he earned a Bachelor's of Architecture in 1989 and married the love of his life in 1988.
His career in architecture led him to Houston just 3 days after graduation where he spent the last 17 years at Bay Architects. His career was distinguished and included designing many area schools, but more than "George the Architect" most of us will remember him as "George the Husband." On June 11th 1988 he wed Amanda Jane Amburg and nothing could have made him happier. He and Amanda shared a life so happy, so full of love, so natural, that they grew into a single entity in the eyes of many. That there was nothing of him that did not include her and nothing of her from which he was missing. Furthermore, he served as a calming force in a large, loud, and loving family.
He is survived by his loving wife Amanda of Houston, his sister Becky (Frank) Bussey of Gorman, his sister Liz (Judson) McCann of Lake Charles, his sister Charmayne (Dr. Pat) Crawford of Lake Charles, his sister Tara (David) Holcombe of Humble, his sister Gena (Doyle) Evans of Lake Charles, and his brother Fred (Marie) Hannie of Lake Charles, his faithful dog Norman, and close friends and family too numerous to mention.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his big brother Joe, and the dog that always stood by his side, Edward.
The memorial services will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel at Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 12:30pm. Contributions may be directed to the Marine Scholarship Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, or CAPs, for these organizations best embody George's admiration for service members and his love of animals.
We all miss you, George, and love you to the moon and back – and then some...

I'll never forget the first time i met George and Amanda. I was a waitress at a bar in Galveston, Mollys Pub, and they walked in. I said, who's burning inscense?". Amanda replied, "That's my perfume honey!". For the next few years I spent many hours at the Hannie home cooking jambalaya, taupe gravy, and learning how to dice tomatoes and make bloody marys. I dog sat Edward many times when George and Amanda would travel. Most of my memories of living in Galveston include George and Amanda. Sending love and thoughts to you sweet girl Amanda. Xoxo

Dear Family, Our prayers are with you all during this saddest of times. I know George would want us to be grateful to have each other and know he is with family in heaven. Seeing George at the Hannie reunion, he was so calm, confident and full of life. It was a pleasure to see him. We were close as children when we would meet at Grandma's home on Ronald Bulvd in Lafayette. These are the memories I will cherish. Please forgive me for not being there for you. We are all blessed by recent events. All my love to our wonderful family of Lake Charles. Cousin John Farris

Amanda, I send my sincere condolences. I am one of the lucky people on earth who got to have wonderful memories with you and George. I will never forget our camping trip, and the fun adventures we had. You and George always had a special place in my heart, still do. May you find comfort, in knowing George is with God in a very special place in Heaven. Probably, leading a group with a hand made walking stick (remember our walking sticks?)exploring some cool part of Heaven with that infectious smile of his! Warmly,

One who is able to maintain a warm, kind, and caring heart, through the difficulties of life, is one who is to be most admired and appreciated. George superceded this, by also spreading joy and humor to the fortunate recipients of his life. To my cousins: Becky Jo, Liz, Charmayne, Tara, Gena, and Fred, I grieve with you, taking some comfort at the thought of the heavenly family reunion taking place right now.
(2 Corinthians 5:8) To Freddie, the remaining brother, my heart especially goes out to you. May you be strengthened with double love and honor, by all who surround you. Mandy, I have never read so many compliments to any wife. May your precious memories, comfort you at this time. God bless you all with His peace and comfort. (John 14:27) My brothers and sisters and family, send their love and prayers. Though we can't be with you in body, we are with you in heart. Love, your cousin, Cecilia

My heart and prayers are for you and the families. Mandy I always think of you and George as life gets full of things to do and it seems that we run out of time to be with friends of years gone by and the growing up memories of the past. The gang will always be together and the memories seem like yesterday. We are there for you in spirit, if you need anything! We are here for you.
We love you all Kersey and Linda Newlin

This morning my mom called from Lake Charles to tell me this sad news. George was one of my best friends at Barbe. He will always be one of the people who reminds us to have faith in goodness; his personal observational abilities & wryness a God send.
I'm sad I lost track of George & his beloved Amanda. It is so lovely to read that he spread his gentle way as he made his way in his personal life & career. Our sincere sympathy & condolences to Amanda & all of George's loved ones.

In celebration of George's life, I remember his bright Light as a man who was a good husband which is an ultimate gift to a woman and a high example for others to follow. He was fun to be around & I cherish the multi-day family reunion George & Mandy hosted in Galveston. Also, hosting my daughter, Cayce, on her teen 'road trip'. Love & Blessings to all on your continued journey. Shea'

It'll feel strange to hear a story about "Aunt Mandy" and it not be followed by "and Uncle George." I have no concept of losing a life partner but thinking of you, Mandy!! My thoughts and prayers are with you. We should all hope to find a love like yours :) xoxoxoxo

Mandy
I am heartbroken at the news of George's passing....way too soon. My deepest condolences to you on your loss. He was the best cubicle mate anyone could ask for at Bay for the 4 years we annoyed everyone with our laughter. Who wouldn't be laughing when George was around - such wit. I have many happy memories of your dear husband and of you both when you'd join us for lunch. I won't forget his smile, his gentleness, his kindness and his unbeatable humor. No one else could put tortilla chips in my purse to make me laugh and get away with it! He will be missed by so many people whose life he has touched. You both are in my thoughts and prayers.

George,
Nobody could ever hold a candle to your grace, charm and poise as an Architect and Friend. Through a decade of successful projects together I will miss most your smile and sarcasm. I knew your wife by name, although I have never met her, because you frequently spoke of her by name when sharing personal stories, never as a label "wife" or "spouse" always as Mandy because that is the type of respectful gentleman that surfaced in you. I will miss you dearly.

George ALWAYS made me smile...he was so quick with a witty comment and a wry and contagious smile. Ever since the first day I met him at Architecture school we hit it off and became Friends...He always had a great view on life (although crazy at times) and he was always a person who knew how to have fun and enjoy life...I did not see him much until we found each other again, along with his equally awesome wife Mandy, here in Houston after i came here due to Katrina and we picked right back up from where we left off..hell he even ended up moving into our neighborhood a few years back which was awesome!!!! .I will miss him so very much and am happy for the time I was able to spend with him...I celebrate his life...sleep well my dear friend and go forth knowing you were loved by all that you touched in your journey here on earth.

Mandy I am so sorry for you loss. I remember your wedding day and how happy the two of you looked. RIP George.

To The family of Mr. Hannie:
I wanted to express my deepest sorrow for the loss of your loved one. I work for Dr. Abreo and was on the phone with George when he had his heart attack. I wish i could have done more than just calling 911 i felt so helpless. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

George was a friend to EVERYONE he ever met. I was one of hundreds who knew you could call him at any time, and George always had time to listen and offer help however he could. In business, he was always professional yet passionate about doing the right thing for the children. George you left all of us too soon... you will be missed. - Brian S. Alling

Nobody could bust up a room with laughter better then George. He and his wife were with me when I met my wife, along with some other Bay Architect employees who have long since moved on. I'll miss your humor and knowledge my fiend.
See you in the big house one day. God bless you and your family.
