Dear Dottie, I learned just today about Dr. Herring passing away. I am deeply saddened. He was a nice man who cared deeply about his students. After passing my comprehensive exams, he came into my office and gave me a pat on the shoulder and hearty congratulations. Well do I remember that moment. George was a colleague, a friend, and beloved by many of us in SHAFR; and I am filled with so many memories of him--and you--at both conferences and in Russia. May you find comfort in your memories of your wonderful years together.

Dottie -- This is terrible news. I remember our last conversation fondly but George's stature among his colleagues and among all us historians is even more memorable. George was a true gentleman. When I taught for a year in the UK history department, George became not only a mentor to me but a friend, one I turned to for professional guidance and good fellowship throughout the years. I will never forget his many scholarly contributions, his legacy of distinguished students, and his warmth and good humor. Dottie, he was the best, wasn't he?
