George J. McCarthy, 94, died Wednesday at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke. George was born in West Springfield the son of George and Mary (Reilly) McCarthy. He grew up in the Merrick Section of town and graduated from Cathedral High School. He was a retired Firefighter for the Town of West Springfield retiring in 1980 after 33 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He leaves his wife Anna M. (Murphy) McCarthy; a son Michael and his wife Ellen of West Springfield; a daughter Maureen Cusick and her husband Mark of Framingham and a beloved granddaughter Keira McCarthy. He was predeceased by his brother Jack McCarthy and sister Eileen Parent. The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Tuesday at 9:00 am with Liturgy in St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church at 10:00 am with burial to follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Years and distance have separated us, but neither can lessen fond memories. I can still picture Uncle Bob standing out back at the Morgan Street Station and stopping on my bicycle to say, "hi" as I was riding home from the Cinemas. Even more vividly I remember Bob holding court down at Pudgy's in the Merrick section so many years ago.
