WASHINGTON (AP) — George Michael, a mainstay on the Washington, D.C., sports television scene for decades who reached a national audience with "The George Michael Sports Machine" highlights show, has died. He was 70 years old.
Michael's daughter, Michelle Allen, said Michael died Thursday morning from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
In a statement, WRC TV in Washington, where Michael had been a sports director, called him a pioneer in sports broadcasting. His show, which began as a late-night local feature, ran from 1980 to 2007. The trendsetting program became the first nationally syndicated sports highlights show in 1984 and was eventually broadcast in 194 markets across the United States and in 10 foreign countries.
Michael's family says plans for a memorial service are not yet complete.

For George...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour...

My condolences. I knew George in Philadelphia, in fact hanging on my wall is a great action photo of Bobby Clarke scoring a goal that was a gift to me from him. He was a talented individual and a great guy.

What a huge lose! Every time George delivered the Sports, he made you fell he was just talking to You and only You. He was such a hard charger with so much character that it was impossible not to enjoy George. He also knew the benefits of pushing people that worked for him to be the best. He loved animals of all types and I have great memories of his reports on Dogs, Horses, Bulls and all the other creatures he loved. He is and always will be the best! God Bless you George and Rest in...

I grew up watching George Michael and loved him! We have lost a good one! I loved watching him and Jim Vance banter back and forth during the news too! What a great relationship they all had!

I guess you can say I grew up watching George, Jim, Doreen, and Bob. I was never really into sports, but he made it so interesting and I loved the interaction with the rest of the team. They would just crack each other up. Rest peacefully my friend. Janet(Fairfax,Va)
